• Step 1: Download Prism Launcher from https://prismlauncher.org/
    • If you’re on windows, usually you should select “Installer (.exe)”
    • If you’re on macos, usually you should select “Universal”
  • Step 2: Log into Prism Launcher
    • Click “Accounts” in the top right
    • Click “Manage Accounts”
    • Click “Add Microsoft”
    • Follow the prompts on screen to add your Microsoft account.
  • Step 3: Install Modpack
    • Click “Add Instance” in the top left
    • In the dialog that pops up, click on either “CurseForge” or “Modrinth” on the left side, depending on which service the modpack is hosted on.
    • Search for the modpack
    • Click “OK”
  • Step 4: Download missing mods
(you should only have to follow this if you downloaded from CurseForge)
    • In the dialog that pops up, click on “Open Missing”
A bunch of CurseForge tabs will open, download every mod that opens
    • Once you’ve downloaded all the mods, go back to the dialog and make sure it says “All mods found” in the bottom left.
    • If it says all mods found, click on “OK”
    • If it doesn’t say all mods found, scroll through the list and make sure you have every mod downloaded.
  • Step 5: Launch the game!
    • Either double click on the modpack or press “Launch” to launch the game

Troubleshooting steps

If the game doesn’t launch, and instead a log window opens, scroll to the bottom and see what the “main” error message is.

”This instance is not compatible with Java version <version>”

This error message pops up if your system’s Java version isn’t compatible with the version of minecraft you’re trying to run.

  • Step 1: Open the modpack settings
    • Select the modpack in Prism
    • Click on “Edit”
    • Click on “Settings”
  • Step 2: Configure the Java installation
    • Click on the checkbox that says “Java Installation”
    • Check which version of Java Minecraft needs. (It should say in the error message)
    • Click on one of the corresponding links to download the version of Java for your modpack.
    • Scroll down to your platform, and download the installer for either the JRE or JDK (I don’t think it matters, but I usually download the JDK)
      • On Windows, download the .msi version, and on MacOS, download the .pkg version.
    • Once you have the correct version of java downloaded, go back to Prism Launcher and click on “Auto-Detect”
    • Select the version of Java you just downloaded.

Changing how much RAM is allocated to the modpack

This is usually required for massive modpacks, and you should try increasing RAM allocated if you’re getting bad performance.

  • Step 1: Open the modpack settings
    • Select the modpack in Prism
    • Click on “Edit”
    • Click on “Settings”
  • Step 2: Change the RAM allocated
    • Click on the checkbox that says “Memory”
    • Change the maximum to however much RAM you want to allocate (1024 MiB = 1 GiB)
    • Try not to allocate as much ram as your system has possible, as you might slow down the rest of your system a ton.
